About Armelle Burke

Armelle Burke's photographic projects explore what exists between the ordinary and the extraordinary. She creates photographs, books and artwork that encourages viewers question our enigmatic world.

Trained in fine art alongside photography, Armelle uses the camera like a paintbrush to express ideas influenced by various art movements and theorists, ranging from the classics to postmodernism. In addition to her art education, she trained with advertising photographers in the UK, where she developed her technical skills. This expertise is evident in her style, as all her photographs are captured in-camera without digital manipulation or artificial intelligence. She believes that the magic of pure photography surpasses that of computer-generated imagery, as it captures the subject's physical presence and immortalises moments in our dynamic world.

Her projects feature an eclectic mix of images, photographed across the globe over three decades. Her latest published project, Talking Pictures, illustrates Chinese Characters with photographs and invites the reader to see language as art. This fifteen year project represents Armelle's passions for art and design, travel, languages, and culture.

Her upcoming project, Spacetime, serves as a philosophical exploration of photography's unique representation of time and space. Photographs are surreal objects that possess a notion of truth, a perspective challenged by pushing the camera to its technical limits. Using black and white film, Armelle creates wild, abstract long exposures of stars in remote paradise islands. These abstract images of distant galaxies are juxtaposed with fleeting moments on earth, frozen in time and presenting the world in a way only the camera can.

Her ongoing projects, In-between Worlds and Ice_olation Landscapes, showcase her unconventional approach to portrait and landscape photography, blending observation and contrived works. She collaborates with artists from different disciplines to create an unusual body of work.

Her past project, Analogue Archives, captures the spirit of the underground music scene in London at the turn of the millennium. Shot on Super 8mm cine film and vibrant colour transparency film, the work serves as a nostalgic record of a generation that embodied freedom.

All of Armelle's artworks are available for sale as large-scale prints, which she exhibits internationally with The London Siger Gallery.
